London Design Biennale
'The Impenetrable Forest' - Argentina Pavilion
The exhibition at Somerset House was organized with the support of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Argentine Ministry of Culture, the Argentine Embassy in London and the British Council.
Thirty-four countries from all five continents, including Argentina, took part in the London Design Biennale from 4 to 23 September 2018 at Somerset House.
Under the slogan Emotional States, these countries have created installations related to the sensorial qualities of design which provoke emotions and moods, exploring the history of each country.
Argentina was represented by an installation called The Impenetrable Forest, created with textile pieces by Wichi communities from Formosa and organized with the support of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Culture, the British Council and the Collective TRImarchi and Sol Marinucci as curators.
The name of the installation makes reference to the area of native forests covering with dense and thick vegetation the Provinces of Chaco, Formosa and Salta.
Wichi textile techniques were chosen to represent Argentina because of their symbolism and exemplary self-sustainability.
In fact, for the Wichi people there is no "I". For them there is only "us". Each of them considers their existence as part of a whole and, therefore, weaving has a metaphorical connotation which relates to their way of life.

The proposal invited those attending the exhibition to travel to the heart of this impenetrable forest to learn about the Wichí culture, contemplate their crafts and feel immersed in its beauty. The installation evoked the textures, sounds and aromas of the forest in this rich region of Argentina. Exquisite pieces created with Wichí chaguar and yica techniques emulated their lush flora to guide visitors on a winding path through the room. The textile barrier that occupied part of the space sought to express that there are places that nature prefers to keep to herself. Ph: Leo Mercado
